Dachshunds originated in Germany and were bred to hunt badgers. They were standard size, weighing upwards of 32 pounds. As the breed evolved dachshund got shorter to better fit in the tunnels. Eventually people wanted a smaller dachshund. They began breeding Miniature dachshunds that weighed up to 13 pounds. These dachshunds were used to hunt smaller animals like hares/rabbits.

Dachshunds come in three coat types and a TON of colors. They come smooth hair, wirehair, and longhair. Colors include, but are not limited to; Clear red, Red with black overlay, Black and Tan, Chocolate and tan, American cream, English Cream and so much more. The most common color and coat types are the clear red smooth hair, which is probably the kind you have seen on the street and said "Look! A wiener dog!"

It is always said that dachshunds are very stubborn dogs, because they are so intelligent. This is quite true. I have also heard that dachshunds are really hard to potty train, however from personal experiance I have yet to find this true, as my dachshund Willow pretty much potty trained herself.

Dachshunds have pros and cons. On the pros side, dachshunds make great guard dogs. Also, if you live in an apartment mini dachshunds are great dogs to have, because they do not require a yard, and can get all the exercise they need in a daily walk, or a long game of fetch. They are adorable dogs, and very smart dogs.

On the cons side dachshunds can be prone to back injury. This is due to their long backs. Back injuries can be avoided with dachshunds by not letting them run up and down stairs, or jump from heights. I hope you find this helpful, for a quick glance at this amazing breed.
